Newburgh Beach Bash 2019 Race Report

The fifth annual Newburgh Beach Bash 10k was held on Saturday 16 March 2019.

This milestone in our event was marked by rewarding all finishers with a unique Beach Bash 5th anniversary t-shirt, and of course, our lovely medal with a representative of the wildlife you are likely to encounter on the course.

This year we had 267 runners take part in what is now a very popular north-east running event.  The event sold out in just 2 hours after launch, and over the following months, we continued to get requests to join the waiting list and take part.

Conditions this year were probably as good as it gets for the time of year.  The morning was clear and dry, and runners started the race at 1100 in good conditions with light winds.  Shortly after the start, the forecast rain arrived though, steadily getting heavier through till the last runner came home, shortly before 1230.

Perhaps due to the better conditions, 2019 was a year of records being broken.

In the men’s race, Mark McCluskie took over one minute off the previous record, winning in 36’26”.  Martin Burns was second in 37’37” and Richard Horne third in 39’00”

Both under 18 records were broken, with Ellen Astley smashing the female record by 12 minutes in a time of 45’54” and Ethan Walker taking the male record with a new time of 47’37”.

In the ladies’ race, Emma Watt was first home in 42’39”, Jeni-Rees Jenkins second in 45’06” and Kym Booth third in 45’25”

Once again, the event was given fantastic support from many local sponsors and community groups.  Our thanks go to Scotia Homes, Ingram’s Home Cure, Keith Kelman (Building Contractors), The Barn and K F Watson (Electrical).  The water station was manned by members of the Newburgh Scout group.  Post race water and bananas were provided by Costcutters Newburgh.  Race registration was again ably handled by the Newburgh Jog Scotland team and post-run home bakes and soup and home bakes courtesy of Newburgh Gala.  And finally, a special thanks to the volunteer marshals, included cadets from the 2nd Battalion The Highlanders ACF, who ensured the safety of runners and the public throughout the event.

Details of the 2020 Beach Bash will be announced through our Facebook page
